What to Wear to a Boudoir Photo Shoot: Tips from a Boston Boudoir Photographer

Getting ready for your boudoir session is part of the experience, and a little preparation can make a big difference in how smooth your session day feels. One of the most common questions I get is “What should I arrive in?” The goal is simple: come comfortable, relaxed, and ready for hair and makeup.

When you arrive at the studio, it’s best to have a clean face and clean, dry hair. This allows the hair and makeup artist to start with a fresh canvas and create the look you want without having to work around leftover product or styling.

Clothing choice is also important. I always recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing to your session. A zip-up or button-up top is ideal because it’s easy to remove without disturbing your hair and makeup once you’re styled. Loose pieces help prevent marks on your skin that can be caused by tight straps, waistbands, or elastic.

For bottoms, try to wear loose pants instead of yoga pants or workout leggings. While those may feel comfortable, the tight fabric can leave lines all down your legs, and those marks can take a while to fade. Sometimes they can even be challenging to remove in editing, so choosing looser pants will help keep your skin looking smooth and photo-ready.

Along the same lines, I recommend skipping a bra and socks before your session. Bra straps and tight bands often leave impressions on the shoulders and back, and socks can leave marks around your ankles.

Accessories matter too. Be sure to remove your watch and any hair elastics from your wrists before arriving. These can leave small indentations that might show up in photos, and it’s best to avoid them ahead of time.

In warmer months, a flowy dress can be the perfect thing to wear to your appointment. It’s comfortable, breathable, and doesn’t leave lines on your skin. Some clients even choose to bring a robe to wear during their session, which I absolutely love. It’s cozy, easy to slip on and off between outfits, and adds a little extra luxury to the experience.

The most important thing to remember is that your boudoir session is meant to be relaxed, fun, and empowering. Arriving in comfortable, loose clothing helps us start the day smoothly and ensures your skin looks its best once we begin photographing.

I can’t wait to welcome you into the studio and create something beautiful together!
