Outdoor Boudoir Session with Colored Smoke | Boston Boudoir Photographer

Some boudoir sessions are so fun and unique that they deserve a second spotlight—and this outdoor boudoir session with colored smoke is definitely one of them. Shot just outside my Reading, Massachusetts boudoir studio, this session brought us into the nearby forest for a dreamy, playful session. Colored smoke adds such a bold, magical element to Boston boudoir photography, but it’s also challenging—timing, wind, and movement all have to align perfectly to capture the moment.

Taken a while back, this shoot brought us just outside the studio and into the nearby forest to play with colored smoke bombs. They’re absolutely stunning when done right… and also one of the most challenging elements to work with. Between watching the wind and moving fast (they disappear so quickly), everything has to come together in just seconds.

Thankfully, our model was a total pro—confident, intuitive, and perfectly aware of where to pose and where to look at exactly the right moment. That level of awareness makes all the difference when you’re working with something this fleeting.

I chose purple smoke, which felt extra special since it’s my branding color, and it added such a bold, dreamy energy to the images. And of course, I can’t not mention the look—Veronica absolutely nailed it. The styling elevated the entire session and tied everything together beautifully.

This shoot is a reminder that stepping outside the box (and the studio!) can be a little tricky—but when it works, it’s completely worth it.
