Did we freeze in the water? Yes. Did we sink in the mud? Also yes. Was it worth it? Of course!
Some photoshoots require a little extra commitment, and this outdoor boudoir session was definitely one of them!
Erica and I have been taking our shoots outside the studio for years now, and somehow, they just keep getting better. There’s something so refreshing about stepping away from the usual bed, studio sets, and traditional backdrops to create something completely different. Nature gives us so much to work with, and I love finding new ways to incorporate it into our boudoir photography.
For this session, we headed into the water for a few different looks, and the results were absolutely worth the chilly toes and muddy feet. We timed it perfectly with the gorgeous fall foliage, giving us those dreamy autumn colors that make New England such a beautiful place to photograph.
And can we talk about this gown?!
We tried a few different outfits throughout the shoot, but this Renaissance-inspired gown was hands down my favorite. The way the fabric gathered, spread, and floated across the water was just so pretty. It created movement and softness in every direction, making the images feel romantic, almost ethereal, and completely different from anything we could create in the studio.
Of course, we can't forget the glam! Erica Singer took care of makeup for this shoot, bringing the whole look together beautifully. Between the styling, the setting, and the gorgeous fall colors, everything came together in a way that felt a little magical.
Why I love outdoor boudoir photography
As much as I love my natural-light boudoir studio in Reading, Massachusetts, I also love getting outside and experimenting with new locations. Outdoor boudoir photography gives us the freedom to play with movement, textures, reflections, and natural light in ways that a traditional studio session sometimes can't.
Water adds an entirely different element. Flowing fabric, ripples, reflections, and the contrast between delicate lingerie or gowns and the natural landscape all create opportunities for images that feel artistic and one of a kind.
And fall in New England? It's hard to beat. The rich foliage, muted earthy tones, and soft seasonal light made this session feel like something straight out of a fairytale.
These sessions are a reminder that boudoir doesn't have to look one particular way. It can be soft and romantic, bold and adventurous, or completely inspired by an idea you've been dreaming about. We can build a session around a beautiful gown, a favorite location, or simply the desire to create something you've never seen before.
